Your Air Freight Is Priced By Space, Not Weight

Carriers bill the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Here's why bulky-but-light imports into Kuwait cost more than the scale suggests — and how to price it right before you book.

Every week, a Kuwait importer forwards us an air-freight quote and asks the same question: why does my light shipment cost more than a heavier one on the same lane?

Air freight is priced by space, not by the scale

Carriers bill the greater of two numbers: the actual (gross) weight, and the volumetric weight — a measure of how much aircraft-hold space the shipment occupies. If your cargo is bulky but light, the space number wins and you pay on volume. If it's dense and compact, the scale number wins and you pay on mass.

That's why a pallet of cushions, lampshades, packaging or empty bottles can cost more to fly than a crate of spare parts that weighs several times as much.

Where importers get caught

Your supplier quotes the scale weight. You budget on it. Then the airline's invoice arrives a large percentage higher — because nobody measured the cartons, and the volumetric weight was always going to apply.

It isn't a hidden fee. It's the pricing basis of every airline on earth. The only surprise is that no one told you before you booked.

Price it before you book

Get three things from your supplier for every carton: length, width, height, and the gross weight. With those, a forwarder prices on the number that will actually apply — so the quote you approve is the invoice you pay. No renegotiation after the cargo is already in the air.

This matters most for e-commerce stock, display goods, furniture parts, and anything foam- or air-filled coming into Kuwait by air.
