Hormuz-bypass routing

Khorfakkan & Fujairah to Kuwait — Hormuz-bypass routing via UAE east coast

From UAE's east-coast ports (Khorfakkan and Fujairah, both on the Gulf of Oman) overland through UAE and Saudi Arabia into Kuwait. One of the most-called transhipment hubs in the Middle East, fully outside Hormuz.

May 2026 routing notice: Strait of Hormuz traffic is operating at roughly 5% of normal volumes. We are actively routing inbound cargo through this corridor as an alternative. Read the full Hormuz-alternatives playbook →

Sea leg

18–25 days (Asia)

Port-to-port. Outside Hormuz transit.

Land leg to Kuwait

7–10 days

Truck via bonded TIR corridor.

Total door-to-door

25–35 days

End-to-end including customs.

Why this routing matters right now

Khorfakkan and Fujairah sit on the UAE's east coast, on the Gulf of Oman side of the Musandam peninsula. Vessels reach both ports without entering the Strait of Hormuz. Khorfakkan is one of the largest container transshipment hubs in the Middle East — most major Asia–Gulf services either call Khorfakkan directly or transship through Jebel Ali via Fujairah feeders.

From Khorfakkan, cargo trucks ~130 km on the dual-carriageway to Dubai, then via UAE/Saudi border at Ghuwaifat, across Saudi Arabia to Al-Khafji, and into Kuwait. The land leg is slightly longer than Sohar's (because Khorfakkan is further north), but the sea leg is often shorter because more carriers call here directly.

This is the established Hormuz-bypass route — forwarders have been using Khorfakkan as a resilience option for decades. The current Hormuz crisis has simply made it the primary routing rather than a backup. See the comparative analysis in our Hormuz alternatives playbook.

The routing in detail

Sea leg: Direct calls from most Asia–Gulf services. Khorfakkan is a major transshipment hub so even when your carrier doesn't call directly, transhipment is fast and reliable.

Land bridge:

Total truck leg is ~1,800 km. With TIR Carnet, cargo passes sealed through all intermediate borders.

Customs, documents and TIR

Standard GCC Common External Tariff applies — 5% duty on CIF customs value for general goods. Required documents for a Khorfakkan-routed shipment:

The Kuwait Customs declaration is filed at the Al-Nuwaiseeb border on truck arrival, not at Khorfakkan on vessel arrival. UAE bonded transit means no UAE VAT applies.

Frequently asked questions

Is Khorfakkan really outside Hormuz?

Yes. Khorfakkan and Fujairah are both on the UAE's east coast facing the Gulf of Oman. Vessels reach them from the Indian Ocean without entering the Strait of Hormuz. This is why both have functioned as Hormuz-bypass options for decades.

What's the difference between Sohar and Khorfakkan routings?

Sea-leg: roughly equal, depends on carrier service. Land-leg: Khorfakkan is about 150 km further from Kuwait than Sohar, so land-leg is 1 day longer typically. Carrier coverage: Khorfakkan has more direct Asia services; Sohar is growing fast. We compare both for every quote and recommend the cheaper/faster option.

Can you handle Jebel Ali warehousing if I need to consolidate first?

Yes. We work with Jebel Ali Free Zone warehousing for cross-docking and consolidation of multi-supplier shipments before the onward truck leg. Adds 2–4 days but is the right move if you're consolidating from 3+ Asian suppliers.

What about UAE imports for re-export to Kuwait?

That's a different scenario — if the UAE is your trading hub and you're consolidating UAE inventory for monthly Kuwait shipments, you may not need Hormuz routing at all. The Jebel Ali → Khafji land bridge is well-trodden. Same TIR Carnet workflow applies.

How frequently can you ship via Khorfakkan?

Daily — both for FCL bookings and LCL consolidation. The corridor capacity is mature.

What's the typical cost premium vs Hormuz-direct pre-conflict?

In normal times, Khorfakkan + truck was 5–15% more expensive than sea-direct to Shuwaikh. Right now (May 2026), it's typically comparable or cheaper because Hormuz-direct carries ECS + war-risk premium. The economics have inverted.
